Sustainability & Innovation - Stretch Solution: Denim

Updated: Oct 22, 2024

Stretch in denim became ubiquitous as the market moved to skinnier fits. But the addition of synthetic elastomers made naturally biodegradable cotton jeans harder to recycle using chemical processing.

Innovative denim mill Candiai is partnering with Stella McCartney for A/W 20/21 on a denim capsule, using its plant-based Coreva Stretch Technology, made from organic cotton wrapped around a natural rubber core, achieving biodegradable stretch with good elasticity and recovery. The denims are dyed using Kitotex Vegetal, a food-waste ingredient, and Indigo Juice. Ten garments will launch in May. Candiani previously debuted the tech with Denham the Jeanmaker.
